How to Choose the Right AC Tonnage for Your Room

Picking an under-sized AC means it never quite cools the room — and runs constantly trying. Over-sized means short cycles, humidity left in the air, and a bigger electricity bill. Here is a fast way to size yours right.

The 600-rule

For typical Pakistani conditions (insulation, west-facing walls, single-glazed windows) a usable rule of thumb is 600 BTU per square foot. A 12,000 BTU unit (1.0 ton) handles ~120–150 sq ft. A 1.5 ton (18,000 BTU) handles ~180–230 sq ft. A 2.0 ton (24,000 BTU) handles ~250–320 sq ft.

Adjustments

  • Top-floor / west-facing room: add ~15%
  • Kitchen attached or many appliances: add ~10–15%
  • More than 3 occupants regularly: add ~10%
