The starting relay and overload protector are the two components that get a hermetic compressor running and keep it from burning out — and they are the first things to check on a fridge that hums but will not start.
The relay energises the start winding for the first fraction of a second and then drops it out; the OLP (a bimetallic klixon) breaks the supply if the compressor draws excessive current or overheats. Supplied as a matched assembly with the moulded terminal cover, spade terminals and an earth lead fitted.
